KIEV, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine has a great potential for developing organic agriculture due to the large area of unused land suitable for organic farming, an industry body said on Thursday.
Ukrsadprom, an association of Ukrainian gardeners, said Ukraine currently uses only 5.3 percent of the 7.4 million hectares suitable for organic farming.
The increasing demand for organic goods in the local and global markets may lead to a substantial increase in Ukraine's organic food output, the organization said.
Fruits, berries and nuts are among the most promising products for organic farming in Ukraine.
Currently, some 300 certified farms annually produce about 20 million U.S. dollars' worth of organic goods, mostly grains and vegetables.
